The Amoeba Wall is a unique design that stands out in the realm of workspace architecture. Its inspiration stems from the microscopic creature, the amoeba, known for its ability to change shape and form. The design team envisioned a future where workspaces are hyper-transformable, much like the amoeba. The Amoeba Wall, acting as the cell membrane, can reconfigure an empty conference room into several smaller team rooms or individual offices, merging and splitting based on the context.
What sets the Amoeba Wall apart is its hyper-efficient system that instantly transforms fixed areas into multi-functioning spaces. The walls autonomously shape the room in response to user needs, creating small individual offices, open teamwork spaces, and private meeting rooms within seconds. This tangible interface allows users to achieve an economical and efficient configurable workspace in a playful manner.
The technology behind the Amoeba Wall is as fascinating as the concept itself. The wall's movements are enabled by a system of omni-wheels. By driving individual wheels at different speeds, each node can move in any direction, allowing the wall to translate and articulate. Control is through a computer program which simulates movements and sends commands via Wi-Fi using the MQTT protocol. The wall panels consist of lightweight aluminum and polycarbonate and can be used as a LED interface.
The project started in March 2016 at MIT Media Lab, Boston Massachusetts and is still a work in progress. The design research was driven by the goal of creating a dynamically reconfigurable workspace that accommodates a wide range of activities in a small area. The team overcame challenges of maximizing control precision on different floor conditions by designing an auto-correction algorithm based on feedback from motor encoders and rotation sensors on the nodes.
The Amoeba Wall is not just a workspace solution but also a responsive art installation. It can form an endless maze or a dancing wall that follows the surrounding music. This innovative design was awarded Silver in A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2017, a testament to its remarkable level of excellence and innovation.
In conclusion, the Amoeba Wall is a groundbreaking design that redefines the concept of workspace. With its ability to dynamically transform based on user needs, it brings a new level of efficiency and flexibility to the workspace, making it a truly remarkable innovation in the field of architecture and design.
